“Choose Koko Chicken – Fresh, Healthy & Always Delicious! 🐔✨ Taste the difference today – your plate deserves the best.”
Hello and welcome! Karibu!
If you’re reading this, you are witnessing the very first chapter of a dream in the making. This is Koko's Chicken Farm, and we are so incredibly excited to have you with us from the very beginning.
My name is Jeanetta Owens, and this story started in my living room in Arusha, Tanzania. It’s a story about finding purpose, embracing a new home, and believing that one person—and one chicken—can be part of something much, much bigger.
I came to Tanzania with a desire to work with young people, to share ideas about life and management. But I quickly learned a profound truth: my ideas were based on where I came from, not the reality of life here. I had to listen, to learn, and to discover where I truly fit in.
I came to Africa to be part of its rising—to see it renewed and restored to the glory it knew before colonialism. For me, it’s a sacred opportunity to walk the land my ancestors were tragically taken from. It’s about coming home.
But the reality on the ground is challenging. I’ve never seen unemployment like it; over 40% in many areas. That means almost half of the population, including brilliant, educated young people, are struggling to find work. So many businesses are tied to tourism, but where is the industry? Where is the local production? Where is the ownership?
I asked myself: How can one person make a difference?
The Answer Wasn’t What I Expected
I tried many things. I made videos, shared information online, and tried to connect the diaspora to the continent. The message is simple: Africa doesn’t just need your money; it needs you. If your heart beats for this land, you belong here.
But the real breakthrough came from a simple, powerful word: Agriculture. Feeding people is the key. Nourishing our communities is the foundation.
My first idea was a cattle ranch. It failed. I thought about goats. It didn’t feel right. Then, a passionate young man started talking to me about chickens. His enthusiasm was contagious! But I thought, “Jeanetta, you’re 82! What are you going to do with chickens?”
Then I remembered: we are given the desires of our heart, but we have to move on them. So I decided to investigate.
Miraculously, things started falling into place. That young man found a fully-equipped farm for rent that perfectly matched my tiny budget. Then, I met my partners: three amazing, driven, and brilliant Tanzanian young men—Frank, Nasser, and Kelvin.
· Frank has an agricultural education but lacked the funding to finish.
· Nasser is a studious self-starter with the drive of a Wall Street entrepreneur but no outlet for his talents.
· Kelvin brings his own unique skills and passion to the team.
These are exactly the young people Africa needs—eager to work, ready to build, but stifled by a lack of opportunity. We put our heads together and Coco’s Chicken Farm was born.
This Is Where YOU Come In
This isn’t just our journey; we want it to be yours, too.
This blog is our living diary. We are going to share everything with you—the triumphs, the failures, the funny moments, the hard lessons. From January 15, 2025, onward, you will have a front-row seat.
We’re starting with chickens, but our dreams are bigger. We’ll raise goats. We’ll farm fish. All organic, all healthy, always thinking of the customer’s well-being first.
Our audacious goal? To supply the best, most natural chicken from the east to the west. Watch out, world!
But most importantly, we are building a model of foreign innovation paired with local ownership. My incredible partners are putting in the sweat equity. They are the ones making it happen. This is their business, their creation, their future. That is how Africa rises.
So, please, bookmark this page. Follow along. Leave us comments and cheer us on. Your support means the world.
This is more than a farm; it’s a movement. We are so glad you’re here.
With love and hope,
Jeanetta Owens, Frank, Nasser, & Kelvin Koko’s Chicken Farm – Arusha, Tanzania
